Recover From Cyber-bullying and Online Harassment

Unfortunately, we live in a  world that allows often extremely dangerous individuals the forum to exercise their venom. There are many people who have less positive agendas, they’ve always been there but never before in human history have they been given the tools they need to write and distribute what they want, when they want without legal consequences.

In the past, people’s venom has been unleashed in verbal attacks, or at worst, a public statement through the once very restricted media, or maybe paint dawns on a wall, but now anyone with the slightest grudge can quickly destroy reputations, undermine good will and rob good people of their integrity.

What is shocking is the way that some people will regurgitate data as if it’s fact. We can’t trust what we find online, indeed, a person I know made 20 major changes to Wikipedia without even registering that stayed broken for days, spreading massive misinformation about 20 of the world’s most prominent historic figures.

We live in a world in which children emulate porn stars and bloggers, longing to be them, longing to wear the next T shirt from a viral marketing fuelled Supreme drop, scrabbling for a $3 shirt priced at $50 in order to prove their imagined status in the church of trend. It’s a sad world that has totally lost touch with the essence of humanity, compassion and love.

When doctors and professors of psychology conspire to destroy reputation which leads to legal redress and police visits, when untruths are generated as evidence of foul play and distributed widely in order to underpin false stories and complaints, where has decency and respect gone?

So if the learned pillars of the community can’t reign in their venom and act with decency how do we expect the internet to remain safe? We can’t. The internet, despite protestations form those obsessed with online interaction, is unsafe, un-policed and a gutter, in which I allow my children very little time to play. If you can google a word and in an instant view the vilest of sexual acts, slaughtered human remains and the sickest images from, literally, any subject matter, why did we put men’s magazines on the top shelf wrapped in brown paper for so long?

In the 30 years since I left childhood, during which time, an almost military planned exercise had to be executed in order to view a few torn pages from Penthouse magazine to get a few moments giggling with friends, it has become possible to see anything in seconds. Shame on society. Shame on our government for allowing it.

Harassment and bullying has to stop. It’s time for the government to take a hard line on unwanted communications. If the consequences were harsher, the cowardly fools would think twice. It’s all because they KNOW that MOST of this behaviour will harm their targets but not them. How do they know this? Because they see it happening every day.
